Honeymoon Tales and the 300 Workout
In the two days since I’ve returned from my honeymoon, the major comment from co-workers, students and others has been how dark I’ve become. I take that as a sign that now is a good time to realy some stories from the honeymoon trip. I’ll break it down over a series of posts.
The Cruise
To talk about the nine-day cruise aboard the luxurious Royal Caribbean (you can tell I’m pining for a part-time blogging gig from RC) is to talk about the best aspect of my honeymoon. Sure, we visited several luxurious islands, but we were only able to experience the luxury for eight hours at a time. The ship itself is where all the action is.
To be aboard such a large ship with so many activities and options for fun is like cramming a month’s worth of weekends into one night. That’s the only way you can describe sitting down to a gourmet meal at 8:30 p.m., going to karaoke at 10, watching a parade at 11, and then hitting a casino at 11:30. This is what many of our nights were made of, and we were loving it for the first three or four days.
Then we figured out the rest of ship.
Sports bars, an extensive gym and spa, a rock climbing wall, basketball court, arcade, are just some of the other things that are available round the clock on this boat. Naturally, we didn’t take advantage of each and every activity on the cruise; it was our honeymoon after all. But we learned enough about the ship to get to what we absolutely wanted to do together, and to plan for the things we missed when we go on our next trip.
That’s right, Royal Caribbean. You got us hooked.
In the meantime, I started my exercise regimen to drop this honeymoon weight and possibly get in better shape for my wife than I was for my fiance’. With school starting soon, I have taken to getting in the bed a little earlier every night and waking up around 6:30 a.m. to workout. For the last two days, I’ve alternated between running two miles in the morning, and doing my abbreviated version of the 300 workout, which consists of:
- 25 pull-ups
- 50 deadlifts at 135 pounds
- 50 push-ups
- 50 box jumps with a 24-inch box
- 50 “floor wipers” (a core and shoulders exercise at 135 pounds)
- 50 “clean and press” at 36 pounds (a weight-lifting exercise)
- 25 more pull-ups — for a total of 300 reps
I say abbreviated because I’ve cut the majority of these exercise reps in half. I do the push-ups instead of pull ups, and I lift weights in place of the pushups. I finish with about 150 reps in total, and I run a quarter of a mile at the beginning and end of the workout. I’m certainly feeling the burn, and considering that I worked out pretty regularly before the wedding, I know this is a rough regimen.
Figure I’ll have some pretty fantastic bow skills before Thanksgiving.
