Jena Thursday

As much as my pride would like for me not to admit it, there are greater things than my wife and me. As much as we have lamented to issues going down with our new house, with school and with everything else life can throw at anybody, today really showed us what we have to be thankful for.

Seeing so many down in Jena, La fighting for the rights of six of our brothers and sisters had an almost heart wrenching effect on my family. My wife shed tears watching the throngs of beautiful people of all races, participating in and appreciating the beautiful struggle. As I was coming home from work, my wife thanked me for encouraging her to wear all black, as was today’s national symbol of solidarity for the Jena 6 movement. I felt good knowing that even in the infant stages of our marriage, she thinks highly of my passion for our people, and the hope that we can overcome.

So to look back and think we had such a long road ahead of us with moving into a new home brings me great shame. But it doesn’t last long; there’s a long way to go in the travels of oppressed people all around the world, and the baby steps that were taken today are far greater than individual steps we’ve taken in our own lives.
