Communication – The Key to a Successful Relationship
Relationships, especially marriages, need to be built on a solid foundation to ultimately be successful. Trust, compassion, love, and compromise are some of the main ingredients for maintaining the balance in a relationship. The most important thing for a couple, however, is communication. Communication is the key to a successful relationship for many reasons, some of which will be explored below.
Trust
Communicating your innermost feelings can be difficult to say the least. Having someone with whom you can share your feelings helps build trust between the people involved and help your relationship to grow and flourish in the process. Trusting someone is very important when forging successful relationships.
Empathy
Communication isn’t just about talking, but listening as well. Actively listening to what your significant other is saying helps you to see the world through their eyes. Listen and respond when necessary, and be careful not to minimize any feelings they may have about a given situation. Your ability to communicate and listen helps support your loved one.
Prevents Resentment
If something is bothering you regarding your significant other, you need to find a way to communicate this without creating conflict. Don’t keep your feelings bottled up—this will only serve to harm your relationship in the future. Resentment can build up and come back to haunt you later. There’s nothing worse than having an argument and bringing unrelated issues up. Tackle them when they arise so you don’t unleash them at the wrong time.
Builds Friendship
Ultimately, your relationship should be built on friendship first and foremost. Effective communication only helps build the necessary feelings and components of a successful friendship, ultimately enriching and solidifying your relationship in the process.
Promotes Cooperation
The end product of effective communication in a relationship is a shared sense of cooperation and unity. Being able to have someone with which you can share you deepest feelings without fear of recourse serves to create a strong and lasting relationship where the two parties work together for a common purpose.
