A Few Words From My Wife On Inauguration Weekend…

And now, a few words from the love of my life that she’d like to share about this historic weekend.

Dear Family and Friends,

It read a quote that resonated with me several weeks ago. It said “If you haven’t got everything that you want, be thankful for the things that you don’t have that you wouldn’t want.” What a powerful statement! What are you thankful that you don’t have?

I am thankful that I don’t have stressful relationships in my life.

I am thankful that I don’t have disease wrecking my body.

I am thankful that I don’t have a broken marriage that lacks love and communication.

I am thankful that I don’t have unsupportive family members.

And…

In a few days, I will be thankful that I don’t have a president who continued to carry on a war, despite the causalities and financial ruin that our country was facing.

Yes, I will be thankful that I don’t have George Bush as my president any longer.

Too often in life we are so focused on getting past the obstacles that we don’t stop to enjoy the celebratory moments. My hope for all of my friends and family is to focus on celebrating this weekend, even in the midst of the storm. There is always room for celebration.

Our journey isn’t over, but we have reached an important milestone. This weekend, my family is doing something each day to be mindful of this milestone. Our itinerary is as follows:

Friday Night

Dinner and Dancing with my amazing husband or bowling (it depends on how tired we are)

Saturday

Spending the day in downtown Baltimore at the War Memorial to see President Obama

Sunday

Attending 7:45 a.m. church service

Watching the Ravens beat the Steelers

Spending time with friends who are coming down from Philly and staying until Tuesday

Monday

Day of Reflection and Prayer for our new president

Tuesday

We will be throwing a Presidential Party, which is similar to our Superbowl parties where we order a lot of food, camp out in front of the TV and watch with excitement.

Please think about making a HUGE deal out of this weekend. Remember…

Celebrate like my grandfather would, who fought for America in World War II

Celebrate like my grandmother would, who faced racism and sexism as a professional nurse

Celebrate like a the slave would, who really had faith that this day would come

Celebrate for all of the children of color who REALLY can be anything they want to be

JUST CELEBRATE!
