Valentine’s Day Masterpiece

As a married man, I’m really starting to get into Valentine’s Day. As a child, it was always about guys and girls using the day to send notes about their true feelings to each other. As a teenager, it was an excuse to get out of the house for a date or a dance. And as a dating adult, it was a topic of meaningless discussion on the nonsense of having one day dedicated to love, only to bend to the societal expectations of presents and wooing in the middle of February.

But as a married man, I can dig the significance of celebrating your love. Marriage slows you down in a lot of ways, good and bad. It’s beneficial to have one person share your interests and expectations out of life, and know that their perspectives will rarely change outside of what you’ve built together. But managing a household and careers can take its toll on a relationship, and Valentine’s Day helps to energize the companionship part of your partnership.

We went to a Valentine’s Day dance yesterday at Martin’s Crosswinds, and having had our wedding reception at a Martin’s facility, we kind of knew the score on food and atmosphere. Still, it was the first time we had been in a party setting for a day that was usually she and I in a quiet little booth in a restaurant.

Needless to say, we had a blast. Not just because of the free flowing alcohol, parade of eccentric outfits and bad cover band, but because it was something out of the norm for our Valentine’s Day celebration. It made me personally realize how much I really enjoy dancing with my wife, and showing off how much we love each other.

We’re both exhausted today, as we usually are on the weekend. But this time, it was because having fun and being in love demanded it.
